The purpose of this blog

The purpose of this blog is to share information and insights about Gluten-free and Lactose-free products.  I am not a recipe person that much, but if I have recipes that I can share, I might do so.  Mostly I want to spread information about new and interesting products and things that I find, and keep the followers of this blog informed about what wheat or lactose might be in what products.

For example, did you know that Kraft cheeses contain 0 g of lactose per serving?  This cheese is delicious, especially the "Mexican" blends, although the kinds that say "contains Philadelphia cream cheese" are not Lactose-free.  One always must be careful; my lactose sensitivity is incredibly high, any small amount will give me cramping.

I began eating Lactose-free about five years ago, and gluten-free about four years ago.  Since that time I have spent many hours in the grocery store, reading labels and trying various products.  It's a potentially hazardous trip, seeing as how the dairy and wheat industries have tremendous power in the U.S. and seek to get their ingredients in as many things as possible.  I cannot eat half the things in the "Gluten-free" section, because they contain lactose.

But there are a few gems out there.  I find that Schar bread is some of the best-tasting (it is a German company carried at Meijer stores in the Midwest/MI).  Many GF breads are found in the frozen section, but these are in vacuum-sealed packages, and carried on the shelf.  I find once opened, they should be refrigerated.

My new favorite is called Canyon Bakehouse, and if you can get it, get it, because it is close to heaven.  Schar has hot dog and hamburger buns, Canyon has hamburger buns and bagels which are harder to find.  Either of these may also be available to be ordered online.  Canyon is carried at Target stores also.

My step-brother runs a healthy food store, and right now the Whole Foods store is moving in not far from his location.  Whole Foods is the Wal-mart of the industry, they move in to a location and proceed to lower their costs enough to drive the competition out of business, and then raise their prices later on so that consumers are forced to pay more because they have no choice.  They are being sued for this kind of shady business in the State of New York.  THIS IS WHAT I HAVE HEARD.  I have never shopped at a Whole Foods, nor do I know much about the company.

My point is, change always seems to make its way to us, we just have to keep aware of what is going on in order to navigate its sometimes-murky waters.  Finding an alternate source for less-expensive products is very important to me, seeing as how my income isn't great right now, and my food assistance just got cut.  So I write.

One last gem before I go.  Kroger Brand Private Selections just came out with a few new kinds of aioli (garlic mayonnaise).  The roasted corn flavor is incredible, I am going to buy more of it today.  Perfect for sandwiches, meat salads, or just as a side with pork or other meat.  So amazeb's.

Peace out.
